Barbara Nowacka Must Apologize to the Author of the HIT Textbook, and He Must Pay Her
A Polish professor is suing Minister Barbara Nowacka for her harsh criticism of a history textbook during a public convention, claiming it damaged his reputation.
In a recent legal dispute, Professor Wojciech Roszkowski is taking Minister Barbara Nowacka to court following her critical remarks about a history textbook titled 'Historia i TeraΕΊniejszoΕΔ' at a convention of the Civic Coalition in October 2024. During her speech, Nowacka accused educators of teaching lies and stated that every page of the textbook contained falsehoods. Roszkowski interprets her words as defamatory and has filed a lawsuit seeking not only an apology but also compensation amounting to 512,000 PLN, which he claims is 1,000 PLN for each page he asserts has been misrepresented.
The court has determined that Nowacka's statements have indeed infringed upon Roszkowski's personal rights, undermining his scholarly authority and credibility. While Nowacka argued that her use of the phrase "on every page" should be considered a form of artistic expression rather than a factual claim, the court has sided with Roszkowski, emphasizing that the implications of her words were harmful. This case touches on significant issues surrounding academic freedom, the responsibilities of public figures when commenting on educational materials, and the potential consequences of public discourse in contemporary Poland.
As the case unfolds, it raises questions about the boundaries of political speech and the protection of intellectual endeavors from harsh public criticism. The legal outcome may not only impact the parties involved but could also set a precedent for similar cases where political figures criticize educational content, requiring a balance between freedom of expression and respect for individual rights in the academic community.
