Local export agroindustry joins as an option for the stranded bananas not reaching Colombia

Stranded Ecuadorian bananas, unable to reach Colombia, will be redirected to local agroindustry and internal consumption.

Ecuadorian bananas that are currently stranded due to restrictions on transportation to Colombia since February 24 will be redirected to the local agroindustry and also absorbed by the internal market. The executive director of the Ecuadorian Banana Exporters Association, Eduardo Manrique, indicates that while a small fraction may still find alternative international destinations, most of the produce is projected to serve local needs.

The prime issue revolves around the specific type of banana, referred to as 'jecho', which is primarily served for agroindustrial processing. This type of banana does not meet the freshness standards required for international export markets that prioritize premium quality bananas. Given the technical specifications of the various markets, the amount of banana allocated to each purpose will depend on those specifications, making the adaptative strategies concerning local agroindustry critical.

Such redirection not only addresses immediate market needs but also signifies a response to international trade challenges faced by local producers. The changes in export dynamics due to Colombian restrictions may provide valuable lessons in resilience and adaptability for Ecuador's agro-industrial sectors amidst evolving international trade policies.
