Fake doctor revealed in Helsinki

A medical student has been treating patients in Helsinki without proper qualifications, as revealed by Helsingin Sanomat.

In Helsinki, a serious breach of medical ethics has come to light involving a medical student who treated patients without proper authorization. According to a report from Helsingin Sanomat, the student was allowed to use the credentials of a qualified doctor, his brother, to access patient information systems and attend to patients at a healthcare facility. This malpractice was uncovered in October 2024, raising significant concerns about the integrity of medical practices in the region.

The healthcare facility was reportedly unaware that an unqualified individual was treating patients instead of a licensed physician. Following the discovery, the clinic reported the unauthorized activities to Valvira, the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health in Finland, and a criminal complaint was filed with the police. The medical student, who allegedly treated 24 patients during August and September 2024, denied any wrongdoing, despite the evidence against him.

Moreover, the brother of the medical student, who worked at the reception of the clinic, facilitated this unauthorized activity by allowing him access to medical procedures, including performing circumcisions. This incident raises serious ethical questions about the supervision of healthcare practices in Finland and the enforcement of regulations aimed at safeguarding patient health and rights. The authorities will likely have to reconsider how they monitor and control access to medical practices to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
