Adventurer Juho Karhu skis from Rauma to Kemi: "If I don't do this now, I won't know if it's still possible"
Finnish adventurer Juho Karhu is undertaking a 700-kilometer ski expedition from Rauma to Kemi, embracing the Arctic conditions after spending years living on a sailboat during winters.
Juho Karhu, an adventurer from Kuhmo, is currently in the midst of his 700-kilometer ski expedition from Rauma to Kemi, having set off on the icy sea about a week and a half ago. As he reaches near the midpoint of his journey, he reflects on the unique experience of being on land after years spent living on a sailboat during the winter months. The expedition has taken him through various landscapes, and he has had a brief respite in Vasa, where he enjoyed the warmth of a hotel before continuing his journey primarily in a tent carried on a sled.
Karhu's love for Arctic voyages isn't new; he has previously explored places like Greenland, Iceland, Alaska, Northern Norway, and even the Arctic archipelago. This current ski trek is, however, a personal challenge motivated by his desire to take advantage of good ice conditions in Finland. With winter providing an opportunity he didn't want to pass up, he has monitored the ice situation closely, indicating his passion for adventure and connecting with nature in his homeland.
The significance of this journey goes beyond just the physical challenge. For Karhu, this expedition symbolizes a connection to his roots and a celebration of Finland's natural beauty, especially during the cold months when the sea is frozen. His determination and zest for exploration reflect a broader interest in local adventure and the resilience of adventurers in facing harsh conditions, embodying the spirit of Finnish outdoor culture.
