From Monday, it will be prohibited to be on the ice of the Daugava in Daugavpils
A ban on being on the Daugava river ice in Daugavpils will come into effect on March 9 due to rising temperatures and melting ice.
As of March 9, a ban will be enacted preventing people from being on the ice of the Daugava River in Daugavpils, due to weather conditions and forecasts indicating that the ice conditions are becoming unsafe. Currently, there is an allowance for access to the ice from the RuΔ£eΔΌi area to the Unity Bridge, as per a directive from the local municipal executive director on January 29. Inspections conducted by the Daugavpils Municipal Utility Department indicate that while the ice on city lakes and ponds is still adequately thick, the safety of the ice on the Daugava River is in question as it begins to deteriorate after the weekend.
The safety of being on the ice is significantly compromised by variable weather conditions, including warming trends, anticipated rainfall, and fluctuating temperatures, which affect the durability of the ice. These factors are especially critical in areas with currents, underwater springs, tributaries, reed beds, and near bridge crossings, where ice tends to be less stable. The municipal authorities are urging residents to be cautious and comply with the impending restrictions, emphasizing the importance of public safety during this transitional seasonal period.
This decision reflects the authorities' commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and visitors in the Daugavpils region, as the ice conditions can change rapidly and unpredictably. As the town approaches the warmer months, local governments are taking proactive measures to prevent accidents associated with unsafe ice conditions, highlighting a localized approach to community safety.
