Indonesia bans social media for children under 16

Indonesia has announced a ban on social media for children under 16 years old, deactivating accounts on several high-risk platforms to protect youth from various online dangers.

The Indonesian government has declared a ban on social media accounts belonging to children under the age of 16. This decision, announced by Communications Minister Meutya Hafid, targets high-risk platforms including YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bigo Live, and Roblox. The aim of this prohibition is to safeguard young users from bullying, fraud, internet addiction, and exposure to pornographic content.

This ban comes just three months after Australia became the first country to impose a similar restriction, prohibiting children under 16 from accessing several social media sites, including YouTube, Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok. The Indonesian initiative reflects a growing trend among governments to regulate social media usage among minors in response to increasing concerns about online safety. The government's statement highlights the necessity of protecting youth from various online risks that are prevalent on these platforms.

The deactivation of accounts for kids on these platforms is set to take effect starting March 28. As countries around the world grapple with the implications of social media on young people's mental health and safety, Indonesia's measures may prompt discussions on the need for more robust regulations globally to ensure children's safety online and to provide a healthier digital environment for the younger population.
