North Korean agents using AI to trick western firms into hiring them, Microsoft says

North Korean agents are using AI technology to create fake identities and deceive western companies into hiring them for IT jobs, as reported by Microsoft.

Microsoft has alerted that North Korean agents are deploying advanced AI technologies, including voice-changing tools, to simulate legitimacy and trick Western businesses into hiring them as IT workers. This scheme is a part of a broader Pyongyang strategy to generate funds for the regime, which has been significantly enhanced by the capabilities of AI to fabricate identities and enhance the credibility of fraudulent job applications.

The modus operandi involves North Korean agents applying for remote positions while operating under fake names, often aided by local facilitators. Once they secure employment, these individuals send their earnings back to North Korea, effectively funding the regime's initiatives. There have also been reports of these fraudsters using threats to release sensitive company information to avoid dismissal, showcasing the depths of their deceitful tactics.

Microsoft's threat intelligence unit has identified these activities, coining terms like Jasper Sleet and Coral Sleet for these AI-centric scams. The implications of this are significant, as the intersection of AI and cyber fraud by state actors raises concerns over workplace security and national cybersecurity protocols, highlighting the need for heightened vigilance among companies hiring remotely.
