Sri Lanka takes custody of second Iranian ship after rescuing crew

Sri Lanka has taken custody of the IRIS Bushehr, the second Iranian ship, and rescued its crew following a recent incident involving the US sinking another Iranian vessel.

Sri Lanka has formally taken custody of the second Iranian ship, the IRIS Bushehr, after rescuing its crew of 208 members amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East. This action follows the US's sinking of another Iranian ship, the IRIS Dena, which resulted in the deaths of at least 87 sailors. The federal authorities in Sri Lanka made the decision after discussions involving the ship's captain and relevant diplomatic missions, underscoring the nation's diplomatic stance.

According to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the IRIS Bushehr requested port entry due to engine troubles, prompting the assistance of the Sri Lankan Navy, which facilitated the offloading of the sailors. Both the IRIS Bushehr and the sunken IRIS Dena participated in a naval exercise with India earlier this year, highlighting the complex geopolitical narratives surrounding these maritime incidents. The Sri Lankan Navy’s involvement demonstrates its active role in maritime safety and regional diplomacy.

Despite pressures and tensions arising from the US-Israeli conflict with Iran, Dissanayake emphasized that Sri Lanka maintains a neutral position and will not permit its territory to be exploited by any nation involved in conflicts. This stance reflects Sri Lanka's commitment to remaining a neutral party in international affairs, particularly in relation to increasing military engagements and territorial disputes in the Indian Ocean region.
