Confirmed: the largest used car dealer in the U.S. will pay $15,000 to all people who meet these requirements
CarMax Inc., the largest used car dealer in the U.S., will pay $15,000 to at least 28 military personnel as part of a settlement over illegal vehicle repossessions.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced that CarMax Inc., the largest used car dealer in the country, has agreed to pay approximately $500,000 to resolve allegations regarding the illegal repossession of vehicles belonging to military personnel. As part of the judicial agreement, the company will pay a civil penalty of $79,380 and distribute another $420,000 in compensation to affected military members. Each of the at least 28 service members will receive a minimum payout of $15,000.
The unlawful repossessions took place between March 1, 2018, and October 24, 2023, involving vehicles owned by active-duty military personnel and reservists called to service. The Department of Justice highlighted that these actions contradicted the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which is designed to protect military members from certain financial hardships, including unlawful repossession of their vehicles. CarMax’s agreement represents an important step in holding corporations accountable for their actions against service members.
This settlement not only provides financial relief to the affected military personnel but also serves as a warning to other companies regarding the responsibilities they have towards service members. The implications of this case may lead to increased scrutiny and regulatory attention on the practices of auto dealers and their compliance with military protection laws, ensuring that those who serve the country are treated fairly in financial matters.
