Unifor inaugurates center for treatment and research of rare diseases
The Edson Queiroz Foundation has inaugurated the Center for Neurodevelopment in Rare Diseases at the University of Fortaleza, aimed at providing integrated care for young children.
The Edson Queiroz Foundation inaugurated the Center for Neurodevelopment in Rare Diseases (CEND) at the University of Fortaleza (Unifor) on Thursday, designed specifically for the care of children up to six years old. This facility is located within the Integrated Medical Care Nucleus (NAMI) and aims to offer a comprehensive approach that combines research, diagnosis, and assistance all in one place. The center's integrated model seeks to bridge laboratory research with clinical care, alongside therapies and rehabilitation services.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Lenise Queiroz Rocha, the president of the Edson Queiroz Foundation, and Dr. Miguel Nicolelis, a renowned neuroscientist recognized for his contributions to neuroengineering. Lenise emphasized that the center's establishment is vital for expanding access to treatment for families who struggle with the expensive costs of private health care. This initiative addresses a significant gap in the healthcare system, particularly in providing necessary services for rare diseases, which often remain underfunded and overlooked.
As the center begins its operations, it symbolizes a critical step forward in the medical landscape in Brazil, especially focusing on young children with rare diseases. By bringing together various medical services and research capabilities, CEND stands to improve not only individual patient care but also to contribute to broader scientific understanding and treatment modalities in this specialized field. The initiative may serve as a model for similar projects across the country, enhancing collaboration between research institutions and healthcare providers.
