Serious warning for winter holidaymakers - there is currently an avalanche risk in these areas
A serious warning has been issued regarding avalanche risks in various areas of Finnish Lapland during the winter holiday season.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute has issued a serious warning about dangerous avalanche conditions in the Lapland region of Finland. This warning affects the areas around Luosto-Pyhätunturi, Ylläs-Levi, Ounas-Pallastunturi, Saariselkä, and Kilpisjärvi, as well as specific topographical forms in Ruka where avalanche conditions have increased. These warnings are particularly relevant for off-piste areas, indicating that groomed and maintained slopes are excluded from the warning scope.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute prepares avalanche forecasts daily for six mountainous areas in Northern Finland, considering the current day and the next three days. It is highlighted that individuals moving in unmanaged natural slopes need to be particularly cautious regarding the possibility of avalanches, as any activity on top of the snow by skiers, snowboarders, or snowmobilers can increase the risk of an avalanche occurring. Notably, avalanches can happen even without the influence of a skier, thereby emphasizing the inherent risks in these snowy terrains.
To ensure safety in potential avalanche situations, the Meteorological Institute advises winter sports enthusiasts to avoid solo excursions into natural slopes. In case of encountering an avalanche, it poses a significant question of who will rescue or call for help, underlining the importance of safety measures and awareness in these hazardous environments. This warning serves as a crucial reminder for holidaymakers to stay informed and cautious while enjoying the winter sports season in Finland.
