9-Year-Old Left Plastic Bag Unpaid, Guard Detained – Lidl: Actions Followed Protocol, but 'Situational Awareness Failed'
A nine-year-old girl was detained by police after a security guard in a Lidl store called them for an unpaid plastic bag, leading to a public discussion on proper situational awareness by store personnel.
Last week, Roosa Säntti, a mother from Helsinki, was at home working remotely when she became concerned about her nine-year-old daughter, who had not yet returned from school. After receiving multiple calls, including one from her daughter's number, she discovered that her daughter had been brought home by the police after a security incident at a local Lidl store. The young girl had gone to the store after school, where she successfully purchased snacks using a self-service checkout but inadvertently forgot to pay for a plastic bag as she left the store.
When the girl was approached by the security guard on her way out, she displayed her receipt for the purchased items, but the guard insisted that the plastic bag—typically considered a minor charge—had not been paid. The situation escalated when the guard opted to call the police, which led to the young girl being detained. Her mother described the scene of the police bringing her daughter home, visibly upset, which sparked discussions about the actions taken by the security personnel and the appropriateness of involving law enforcement in such a trivial matter.
Lidl responded to the incident by stating that the actions of the guard were in accordance with company protocol, yet admitted that 'situational awareness' failed in handling the matter given the age of the child and the nature of the alleged offense. The incident raised awareness of the disproportionate response to minor infractions, particularly involving children, and prompted reflection on how such situations should be dealt with in a way that prioritizes understanding and compassion over strict adherence to protocol.
