Russia and Ukraine exchange 300 prisoners of war for each side
Russia and Ukraine have exchanged 300 prisoners of war from each side as part of their ongoing conflict, facilitated by talks with the United States.
On Friday, Russia and Ukraine announced the exchange of 300 prisoners of war from each side in the second round of a prisoner exchange process, resulting in 500 soldiers returning to their homes. This exchange agreement was reached during trilateral talks with the United States last month in Geneva. Prisoner swaps represent one of the few avenues for cooperation between the warring nations, as negotiations to bring an end to the ongoing four-year war have stalled. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the return of 300 Ukrainian defenders, which included two civilians, sharing photos on social media of soldiers disembarking from buses wrapped in Ukrainian flags. Earlier, the Russian military announced the return of 300 Russian soldiers as part of the exchange. On Thursday, both sides released 200 soldiers through mediation by the United States and the United Arab Emirates during separate exchange operations. These prisoner and body exchanges are the only tangible outcomes of direct talks between Kyiv and Moscow, highlighting the limited progress in resolving the conflict despite continued discussions. The complexity of the ongoing war and the challenges in diplomatic engagement underscore the importance of these exchanges, as they offer a glimpse into possible future negotiations between the two nations.
