NBS have begun to deploy counter-mobility barriers in the eastern border region

The National Armed Forces (NBS) of Latvia have initiated the construction of counter-mobility infrastructure in the eastern border areas, emphasizing national security against potential threats.

The National Armed Forces (NBS) of Latvia have commenced the first phase of constructing counter-mobility infrastructure in areas of confiscated real estate along the eastern border, as announced by the Ministry of Defense. This work is taking place on a property owned by the Balvi municipal government that has been transferred for use without compensation to the Ministry of Defense. In this location, several hundred 'dragon's teeth'—a type of concrete obstacle—will be deployed by the 2nd Vidzeme Brigade of the National Guard.

Additionally, the 3rd Latgale Brigade of the National Guard is set to begin placing various other counter-mobility obstacles in other designated areas along the eastern border. Defense Minister Andris Sprūds (P) highlighted that the implementation of these counter-mobility measures serves as a tangible and visible commitment to ensuring Latvia's security from the very first centimeter of its territory, reinforcing the nation's defenses against potential aggressions.

This initiative follows the adoption of the Counter-Mobility Infrastructure Development Law by the Saeima in the fall of 2025, which underscores the strategic importance of fortifying Latvia's borders. On December 22, 2025, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the necessary areas for the implementation of the first phase, marking a significant step in Latvia's defense strategy amidst rising regional tensions, emphasizing national resilience and preparedness against external threats.
