Prevc Disqualified Instead of Winning, Yet Completes Ski Jumping 'Grand Slam'

Slovenian ski jumper Domen Prevc became the overall winner of the World Cup despite being disqualified from first place in a competition due to longer skis.

Domen Prevc, a Slovenian ski jumper, recently secured the overall title of the World Cup even after he faced disqualification in a competition in Lahti for having skis that exceeded regulations. The disqualification came despite his impressive performance that initially awarded him first place, marking his seventh consecutive victory, which would have set a new record in the World Cup. Prevc's skis were found to be one centimeter too long based on his weight, leading to his disqualification minutes after what seemed to be a triumphant victory.

This outcome, however, did not diminish Prevc's extraordinary achievement over the past year, as he successfully completed all five major titles in ski jumping: World Champion, Ski Flying World Champion, Olympic Champion, and winner of the Four Hills Tournament. The only other athlete in history to accomplish this so-called 'Grand Slam' is the Finnish legend Matti Nykänen from the 1980s. Prevc's achievement highlights his dominance in the sport and solidifies his place among the legends of ski jumping.

After Prevc’s disqualification, the second-place athlete, German Philipp Raimund, was declared the winner of the event, marking his first World Cup victory less than a month after he triumphed at the Olympic mid hill competition. Meanwhile, the Czech representative Roman Koudelka unfortunately did not score points, finishing in 42nd place. The unfolding of this competition has generated discussions on the importance of adherence to equipment rules and its implications for athlete recognition in competitive sports.
