Chad: Former rebel leader Erdimi quits ministerial post

Dr. Tom Erdimi has resigned from his position as Chad's higher education minister, becoming the second minister to leave President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno's government since 2021.

Dr. Tom Erdimi, the former rebel leader who has been serving as Chad's minister of higher education since October 2022, has announced his resignation. This news was disclosed in an official statement by Prime Minister Allah-Maye Halina on March 5, 2026, indicating that Erdimi's departure was a voluntary choice. Erdimi's resignation marks a significant event as he is the second minister to leave President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno’s cabinet since he took office in April 2021.

During his time in office, Erdimi was noted for implementing key reforms aimed at modernizing Chad's educational landscape. His initiatives included digitizing the university admission process in Chad's premier institution, the University of N’Djamena, as well as spearheading the establishment of new universities and research institutes, thereby enhancing access to higher education in the country. Erdimi's background as a former opponent of the late President Idriss Déby further highlights the ongoing political transitions in Chad since the suspension of the previous regime.

Following Erdimi's resignation, a permanent secretary has been appointed to act temporarily as the head of the Ministry of Higher Education. This change could indicate potential shifts in policies or directions within the ministry, reflecting the ongoing political dynamics in Chad as the government navigates challenges and reforms amidst a backdrop of national change since the 2021 transition of power.
