Industry insiders have warned that if coal imports do not resume promptly, textile mills may face the dire consequence of shutting down. According to Jitu Bhai Vakaria, President of the South Gujarat Textile Processors Association, the Surat textile industry is completely dependent on coal. The disruption in coal supply has created a major crisis for the region's textile sector. The average textile unit in Surat consumes approximately 40 to 50 tons of coal daily, and there are around 400 to 450 such industrial units that rely on this essential energy source.

High-quality coal used in Surat primarily comes from Indonesia via maritime routes, but the current global warfare has significantly disrupted these shipping lines. The industry is at a critical juncture, where immediate governmental action and support are required to prevent further escalation of the crisis, which not only impacts local businesses but could also have broader economic implications for the region and its workforce.
