They managed to shoot only once: Ukrainians silenced one of the most threatening Russian weapons
Ukrainian drone operators successfully destroyed a Russian TOS-1A missile system shortly after it launched one missile.
On March 5, the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service released a video showcasing a clash where Russian forces had deployed a TOS-1A system into a firing position. Ukrainian drone operators from the 'Phoenix' unit discovered the system just as it prepared to launch, striking it effectively. The report indicated that while the Russian forces managed to fire one missile, the system was swiftly destroyed shortly thereafter, underscoring the rapid response capabilities of the Ukrainian forces.
The TOS-1A 'Solntsepyok' system is considered one of the most dangerous pieces of equipment employed by the Russian ground forces. Mounted on a tank chassis, it fires thermobaric rockets that can generate high-temperature explosive waves over a large area, making it particularly lethal against fortified positions and densely populated urban areas. The risk this weapon poses highlights the ongoing challenges both sides face in combat situations, particularly in contesting territorial control and operational effectiveness.
In addition to the destruction of the TOS-1A system, the Ukrainian drone operators targeted several other Russian assets within the same area. Reports confirmed that the drones engaged multiple objectives, signaling the ongoing tactical advantage the Ukrainian forces are attempting to leverage through innovative drone warfare. These strikes not only diminish Russian military capabilities but also reinforce the significance of drone operations in modern warfare, particularly within the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
