P. Xenokostas: Shipyards and ferry transportation are a unified ecosystem and a strategic priority for the country
The Greek shipbuilding industry is prepared to take on the renewal of the ferry fleet if supported by national and European institutional and financial backing.
P. Xenokostas, the CEO of ONEX Shipyards & Technologies, emphasized the readiness of the Greek shipbuilding industry to support the modernization of the ferry fleet during a maritime conference organized by The Economist. He highlighted the importance of having appropriate institutional and financial support at both national and European levels to facilitate this initiative. This focus on modernization aligns with the broader strategic priorities for Greece's maritime sector.
During the conference held at Divani Apollon Palace in Kavouri, Xenokostas engaged in discussions with notable figures such as Kosti Fragkoulis, founder of Franman, and Alasdair Ross from The Economist. Xenokostas, who also serves as the President of the Union of Greek Shipowners, presented an outline of a recent strategic agreement with Hanwha Power Systems, reinforcing the significant cooperation needed in shipbuilding and associated technologies.
The emphasis on creating an industrial hub in Greece reflects a larger vision for fostering a competitive and sustainable maritime industry. By upgrading the ferry fleet and bolstering shipbuilding capabilities, Greece aims to not only improve its domestic shipping services but also to position itself effectively within the European maritime landscape, demonstrating a commitment to innovation and economic growth in the sector.
