Elysée returns
The classic Finnish sparkling wine Elysée is making a comeback with a renewed formula, produced in Turku as it was originally.
Elysée, a classic sparkling wine that gained popularity in Finland, is set to return to the market after halting production in 2022. Initially introduced in 1953, Elysée was made from white currants and became Finland's best-selling sparkling wine through the 1990s, accounting for a remarkable 90% of the country's sparkling wine sales at that time. Its significance is underscored by its name also being associated with a well-known events arena in Turku until the early 2000s.
Following a brief hiatus, Hartwall has acquired Elysée and plans to revive it with a modern twist, incorporating updated flavor profiles to cater to contemporary Finnish tastes. The company acquired Elysée and other Finnish brands from the French alcohol company Pernod Ricard in early 2025, allowing for local production in Turku, where the wine has a storied history. This revival reflects a growing trend in Finland toward re-engaging with nostalgic local products in the competitive beverage market, which has increasingly been filled with international brands.
As Elysée returns to the shelves, it marks not just the revival of a beloved product but also an effort by Hartwall to connect with Finnish consumers who have an affinity for local heritage and flavors. The reintroduction of Elysée could signal a potential shift back to appreciating domestic offerings in the Finnish sparkling wine sector, which has faced stiff competition from foreign labels over the past few decades.
