KUKU: Songwriter of the Year Emily J: There are certain formulas in songwriting
Emily J, the Songwriter of the Year for the second consecutive year, shares insights on songwriting formulas developed over her nine years of experience.
Emily Jürgens, popularly known as Emily J, has garnered the title of Songwriter of the Year for the second consecutive time after collaborating with several notable Estonian artists. In a recent interview on Kuku Radio, she discussed her songwriting journey, noting that after nine years of writing, she has developed certain mathematical formulas for crafting songs. For instance, she mentioned that key elements like a catchy chorus are often crafted to appear before the one-minute mark in a song, a technique she and her fellow songwriters keep in mind to create memorable tunes.
Despite her success, Emily J emphasized the financial challenges of making a living solely through music in Estonia, pointing out that royalties and streaming revenues are quite limited. She mentioned that earnings from platforms like Spotify are minimal, explaining that a million streams may only translate into around 4,000 euros. This reality highlights the tough economic landscape for artists in the Estonian music industry, motivating songwriters like her to consider collaborations and opportunities abroad to find more lucrative avenues.
Unlike some of her fellow nominees such as Nublu and Frederik Küüts, Emily J has focused on writing songs primarily for international markets. She believes this focus has contributed to her success and recognition in the Estonian music scene. Emily J's insights reflect the evolving nature of the music industry, where artists must innovate and adapt to sustain their careers, especially in a small market like Estonia.
