Residents of Rajamäki in Nurmijärvi Fight for Their Health Center
Residents in Nurmijärvi are campaigning to save their health center from closure, set to occur at the end of the year.
Residents of Rajamäki in Nurmijärvi are expressing their concerns over the impending closure of their health center, which is scheduled to close at the end of the year as decided by the Central Uusimaa Wellbeing District. This decision was made by the regional council in October 2025, prompting over 4,200 local residents to sign a petition in support of keeping the center open. The community feels that their voices are not being heard and that there is a lack of genuine dialogue regarding the closure.
The Wellbeing District has indicated that the closure of the Rajamäki health center is part of a broader productivity and economic program aimed at ensuring quality and equitable services for all residents in the area. While acknowledging that the closure will leave two other health centers operational in Nurmijärvi—one of which is reportedly more than eight kilometers away from Rajamäki—the communication director, Anu-Kaarina Suonpää, emphasized the importance of viewing service networks from a wider regional perspective rather than by municipal borders.
The situation highlights the tension between residents' needs and government efficiency measures, with local communities often feeling sidelined in decisions that directly affect their access to vital services. The outcome of this campaign by the Rajamäki residents may have significant implications for health service delivery in rural areas and community engagement in public decision-making processes moving forward.
