Civil disability, the assessments are changing: the new rules

Italy has initiated a trial to reform the civil disability assessment process, aiming for greater consistency and simplification across provinces.

As of March 1st, Italy has embarked on a trial run initiated by INPS regarding the procedure for obtaining civil disability status. This reform, introduced by Legislative Decree 62/2024, seeks to drastically simplify and standardize the assessments related to disability across the nation. The trial has expanded to cover 40 provinces after a pilot phase that began earlier this year in select areas including Brescia, Catanzaro, and Florence.

The objective of these new regulations is to offer a more streamlined and accessible process for individuals seeking civil disability recognition. Previously, there were significant territorial differences that affected evaluations and timelines, often leading to confusion and delays. Under the new system, INPS will take full responsibility for the assessments, eliminating local commissions’ involvement and thereby aiming to create a uniform procedure throughout the country.

This reform is expected to alleviate the burden on applicants and improve the consistency of disability determinations. By simplifying the assessment process, the Italian government hopes to ensure that individuals with disabilities receive timely and fair evaluations. The move signals a significant shift in public policy, aiming to enhance the quality and accessibility of services for disabled individuals across Italy.
