Africa: Serec Warns of Risk Posed By Us-Iran Tension for African Maritime

The Sea Empowerment and Research Center warns that tensions between the US and Iran pose economic and security risks for African maritime nations.

The Sea Empowerment and Research Center (SEREC) has raised alarms about the economic and security challenges faced by African maritime nations due to the escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. The center reports that these tensions could have far-reaching implications, particularly for the import-dependent economies of the African Union, which are deemed especially vulnerable to disruptions in global markets.

According to SEREC's Head of Research, Eugene Nweke, the potential rise in global oil prices and shipping costs could lead to significant inflation in fuel and food prices across the continent. He elaborated that ongoing tensions could result in volatility in oil prices, an increase in freight rates, spikes in war-risk insurance, and a general inflationary trend worldwide. This situation poses a serious risk to the economic stability of African countries that rely on stable supply chains for essential goods.

Moreover, Nweke indicated that maritime security would likely come under increased strain, as shipping routes may become more unpredictable. Therefore, it is imperative for African nations to enhance naval coordination and security measures to mitigate potential risks associated with these geopolitical tensions. Without intervention, African maritime economies could face significant challenges, further exacerbating existing vulnerabilities in the region.
