Now it has been revealed who voted for the communists in Westend, Espoo: 'It turned out to be quite a funny thing'
Alex Keskitalo, a former pop artist, reveals he was one of the few who voted for the communists in the affluent neighborhood of Westend, Espoo, which sparked curiosity after the municipal elections.
Alex Keskitalo, known as the vocalist and songwriter of the band Valvomo, gained attention recently due to his unexpected voting choice in the municipal elections. Two decades ago, Keskitalo's band made waves with their hit song 'Mikä kesä'. However, a year ago, his whereabouts were largely a mystery; it wasn't clear where he was or what he was doing. In the aftermath of the 2025 municipal elections in Westend, a wealthy district of Espoo, it was revealed that only six people had voted for the communists, prompting interest in those voters' identities.
Keskitalo himself has embraced the quirky label of being 'the Westend communist', as he openly admits to voting for the Finnish Communist Party candidate Otto Raski. He recalled his time living in Westend where he rented an apartment and humorously described his reasoning behind his vote as somewhat of a joke. Despite not considering the municipal elections serious, he noted that he wanted to make a statement by casting his vote for Raski, who only received three votes in that affluent area, highlighting the rarity of such a choice in a predominantly wealthy and conservative community.
The revelation of his voting choice has sparked discussions about the political landscape in affluent neighborhoods like Westend, where voting trends often reflect the socio-economic status of the residents. Keskitalo's story sheds light on the sometimes surprising political affiliations individuals have, which can challenge preconceived notions about wealth and political identity in Finland. The incident ultimately raises questions about representation in local governance and the diversity of political views even in seemingly homogenous, affluent districts like Westend.
