The Azalea is in Full Bloom at the University of Latvia Botanical Garden
The University of Latvia Botanical Garden's azalea collection is in full bloom, showcasing nearly 1000 shrubs of various colors after decades of cultivation.
The University of Latvia Botanical Garden (LU Botāniskais dārzs) boasts an impressive azalea collection that has been developed over more than half a century. Founded by Professor Rihards Kondratovičs in 1956, the collection has grown remarkably from a local initiative into the largest azalea collection in Northern Europe, with almost 1000 shrubs. This collection showcases a wide spectrum of colors, including soft whites, bright pinks, reds, and various two-toned and double-flower varieties.
Currently, the azaleas are in full bloom, reaching their peak display, which invites visitors to experience this vibrant natural spectacle over the next week. The botanical garden is known for its unique efforts in horticulture, and this collection stands out not only for its size but also for the diversity of species cultivated, encapsulating both local and foreign breeding efforts.
In addition to enjoying the blossoms, the garden is hosting special drawing workshops in collaboration with the association "Ota dabā" on March 15, aimed at children, families, and adults. These workshops emphasize careful observation, encouraging participants to appreciate the intricate forms and colors of the azaleas, thus fostering a deeper connection with nature and enhancing artistic skills.
