Ex-AGF Adoke welcomes OPL 245 settlement, demands apology
Former Nigerian Attorney-General Mohammed Bello Adoke has expressed his support for the government's settlement of a long-standing dispute over Oil Prospecting Licence 245, calling for an apology for past actions.
Mohammed Bello Adoke, the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has publicly welcomed the Nigerian Federal Government's resolution concerning the longstanding conflict over Oil Prospecting Licence 245 (OPL 245). In his statement, shared through PUNCH Online, Adoke regarded the resolution as not only overdue but a validation of the efforts made by the previous administration under President Goodluck Jonathan. According to Adoke, the agreements that were reached nearly 15 years ago to address the contentious oil block dispute are now finally being implemented, marking a significant milestone in the dispute's resolution.
Adoke emphasized the importance of the settlement in ensuring that OPL 245 moves towards productive use, which has been a contentious issue for many years. He pointed out that the resolution restores a sense of dignity to the previous negotiations and affirms the validity of the actions taken during Jonathan's presidency. Adoke's comments reflect a broader agenda to not only ensure the proper management of Nigeria's natural resources but also to revisit the accountability of past governmental actions regarding major oil contracts.
Additionally, as Adoke praised the current government led by President Bola Tinubu for their role in reaching this settlement, he also called for an official apology regarding the controversies that surrounded the OPL 245 negotiations in the past. This call for an apology underscores a lingering discontent over how previous administrations handled the oil licensing issues, indicating that support for the current resolution could also hinge on acknowledging and addressing historical grievances.
