Iranian drone attacks have taken data centers out of service

Iranian drone attacks have disrupted data centers in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, affecting services provided by Amazon Web Services.

Iranian drone strikes have rendered data centers in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain inoperable, significantly disrupting digital services in the region. Amazon Web Services (AWS) confirmed that two of its facilities in the Emirates were directly hit by drones, leading to service outages for various clients, including online banking services. Additionally, a data center in Bahrain managed by AWS was also affected by these attacks attributed to Iran.

The strikes, reported by the Iranian news agency Fars with ties to the Revolutionary Guard, indicate that Iranian forces view these digital infrastructures as integral to the ongoing conflict. While AWS has been actively engaged in restoring services across the affected data centers, Microsoft reported that its facilities have not been directly impacted thus far. The drone strikes reflect a broader strategy by Iran to target foreign technological assets, aligning with their military and geopolitical objectives in the region.

Experts, such as Matt Pearl from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, assert that the targeting of data centers signifies a new phase in the ongoing conflict, where digital warfare and cyber capabilities play a crucial role. This incident raises concerns regarding the safety and security of digital infrastructures in volatile regions, and the implications of such attacks could extend beyond immediate service disruptions, impacting the relationships between nations involved in the conflict.
