Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican – 400 Years
A new online booking system will be launched at Saint Peter's Basilica to reduce visitor wait times as the landmark celebrates 400 years since its completion.
The Vatican has announced a new online booking system aimed at reducing visitor wait times as it celebrates the 400th anniversary of the completion of Saint Peter's Basilica. This system will be complemented by an interactive platform where guests can share their experiences, enhancing the visit for tourists and pilgrims alike. Furthermore, the Basilica will offer synchronized translations during masses in 60 languages, ensuring that visitors from around the world can participate in the religious ceremonies effectively.
Alongside these technological advancements, a new permanent exhibition detailing the history of the Basilica will be established on its terrace. For those feeling peckish during their visit, a snack bar has also been set up, although it has already received mixed reviews. In addition to these updates, a new Stations of the Cross pathway and a special pilgrimage route have been created to enhance the spiritual experience for visitors as they engage with the historic site.
The jubilee celebrations will culminate in a mass led by Pope Leo XIV on November 18, coinciding with the anniversary of the Basilica's completion. This iconic structure has a rich history, originally commissioned by Constantine I in the 4th century and later reimagined in the Renaissance style by notable architects under Pope Julius II in 1506. The events planned to mark this anniversary highlight the Basilica's historical significance and its ongoing role as a key center for pilgrimage and Christian worship.
