US temporarily allows India to buy Russian oil from tankers at sea

The US has temporarily authorized India to purchase stranded Russian oil from tankers at sea for 30 days.

The United States has granted India a temporary 30-day authorization to purchase Russian oil currently held on tankers at sea. This decision was announced by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who emphasized that this move is intended to ensure that oil continues to flow into the global market. Bessent detailed that this temporary measure aims to address current supply chain issues without significantly benefiting the Russian government, as it permits the transaction of oil that is already stranded at sea.

Bessent noted India's importance as a partner to the United States, expressing hope that this authorization would lead to greater purchases of US oil by India. He reassured that the measure is short-term and pointed out that the authorizations will not provide substantial financial gains for Russia, reinforcing the United States' stance on limiting the economic benefits of Russian oil amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Additionally, there is speculation surrounding the direction of oil shipments, as tracking data revealed that two Russian oil cargoes that were initially headed towards East Asia have redirected towards India, indicating a proactive approach by New Delhi to respond to its energy needs while balancing international relations.
