Decrease in caregivers and domestic workers, a "market" worth 4 billion
The domestic work sector in Lombardy plays a crucial role in the region's economy and welfare system, but recent reports indicate a decline in regular employment within the industry.
The report from the National Observatory, Domina, reveals that the domestic work sector in Lombardy, Italy, is valued at nearly four billion euros and employs over three hundred thousand individuals, including employers and workers. This sector is fundamental to the regional welfare system, primarily supporting families and providing assistance to the elderly, thereby injecting vital resources into the Lombard economy. Though Lombardy remains the leading Italian region in the domestic labor market, the past three years have seen a notable decline in the number of regular employees in this field.
Presenting the 7th annual report at Palazzo Lombardia, key regional government officials highlighted the importance of this sector while acknowledging the challenges it faces. In 2024, Lombard families are expected to spend around 1.7 billion euros on domestic work, which contributes significantly to generating a regional Gross Domestic Product (GDP) value of 3.9 billion euros, or 0.9% of the total economic output. The decline in employment raises concerns about the sustainability of this crucial labor market, which has traditionally supported many families while also facilitating economic growth in the region.
As the report unfolds, it is imperative for policymakers to address the shrinking number of regulated domestic workers, as this trend could threaten the stability of the welfare system in Lombardy. Initiatives to promote fair labor conditions and the regular hiring of domestic workers might be essential to bolster this sector and ensure its growth in the future. Such steps are vital not only for the workers and families involved but also for maintaining the region's economic health and social stability.
