Hockey fans enchanted, Yle's lion commentator Toni Saukkola got a new position

Toni Saukkola, age 34, who gained visibility as the commentator for all Finnish 'Leijonat' games during the Milano-Cortina Olympics, is stepping into a new role with the IS-Kiekkokierros commentary team for Ilta-Sanomat. Saukkola expressed enthusiasm about joining the team, highlighting the positive reputation he has heard regarding the organization’s thorough approach toward successful broadcasts. He realized almost immediately in discussions that this was the team he wanted to be part of, suggesting a strong alignment between his ambitions and the team's goals.

Before the Olympics, Saukkola was relatively unknown outside of specific circles, but his performance during the games captured the interest of the hockey audience. He revealed that he was pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming positive feedback he received regarding his commentary during the Olympics. The passionate Finnish hockey fans embraced his commentary style, with Saukkola noting that approximately 95 percent of the feedback was constructive and affirmative, showcasing the audience's appreciation of his work.

Ilta-Sanomat's hockey coverage, known as IS-Kiekkokierros, will air live every Friday at 5 PM during the SM-liiga regular season.
