Eni reconciles in Nigeria: gas and oil extraction begins

Eni has resolved its legal disputes with Nigeria and is set to begin significant oil and gas production in the country, which will greatly impact Italian energy supplies.

Eni, the Italian multinational oil and gas company, has successfully cleared its legal issues with Nigeria, allowing it to restart oil and gas production in the region. This development is significant as it will enable Eni to produce up to 150,000 barrels of oil and 5.7 million cubic meters of gas per day, potentially transforming Italy's energy supply landscape. The two key fields involved are Zabazaba and Etan, which collectively hold an estimated 500 million barrels of reserves.

The agreement was solidified during a recent meeting between Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Eni's CEO Claudio Descalzi in Abuja, where they discussed ongoing operations and future initiatives to enhance deep offshore development in Nigeria. A central theme of their discussions was the recent agreement regarding Oil Prospecting Licence 245 (Opl 245), which aims to solidify Eni's role in the Nigerian oil sector. This move is a strategic partnership between Eni and the Nigerian government to ensure stable energy extraction operations.

This reconciliation not only opens up significant energy production capabilities for Eni but also marks a pivotal shift in Italy's approach to energy sourcing amid ongoing global energy challenges. By increasing its oil and gas supply from Nigeria, Eni is positioning itself to better support Italy's energy needs, aligning with broader European energy security goals as the continent seeks to diversify its imports away from reliance on fewer global suppliers.
