Former Canberra Reptile Zoo employee jailed for sexual abuse, grooming
A former employee of Canberra Reptile Zoo has been sentenced to over five years in prison for sexually abusing and grooming teenage girls.
Liam Anthony Thornton, a former employee at the Canberra Reptile Zoo, has been sentenced to more than five years in prison after being found guilty on multiple charges, including sexual intercourse without consent and grooming. The court proceedings revealed that Thornton, in his early 20s, engaged with two teenage girls through their shared interest in reptiles. During this time, he manipulated and groomed them before committing serious sexual offenses.
The charges against Thornton included 11 different offences, which the ACT Supreme Court jury deliberated on before reaching a verdict last year. The details from the court indicated that during the grooming phase, Thornton built a rapport with the victims, ultimately leading to coercive sexual interactions. His actions not only violated the trust placed in him as a figure associated with a family-friendly establishment, but also inflicted severe emotional and psychological harm on the young victims.
With a non-parole period set at three years and two months, Thornton is expected to serve a significant amount of time before eligible for release in 2029. This case raises important discussions around the safety of children in environments where they may interact with adults in positions of trust, highlighting the need for better screening and monitoring of individuals who work with minors.
