1600 Donors of Hope Bridge Also Have Their Personal Information Leaked... Including Resident Registration Numbers for 3 Weeks

Personal information of over 1,600 donors to the Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association has been leaked for about 20 days, including sensitive data like their names and resident registration numbers.

The Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association announced that personal information of around 1,600 donors was exposed on its website for nearly 20 days from May 5 to May 25. This leak included sensitive data such as names and resident registration numbers of the donors, which was not adequately masked or protected during the publication of the association's financial disclosure documents for 2022-2024. The association discovered the issue during internal monitoring and promptly removed the post on the same day it was identified.

This incident follows a similar breach reported earlier by the Community Chest of Korea, which acknowledged that sensitive personal information, including real names and resident registration numbers of over 600 high-value donors who contributed 20 million won or more, was also leaked. The exposure was linked to financial disclosure materials published on their website, which had remained accessible for about 11 months without proper security measures. The Community Chest of Korea only became aware of the breach recently and is currently verifying if any further information has been compromised.

The Hope Bridge association has vowed to strengthen its internal security protocols to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. They have committed to holding responsible parties accountable and enhancing the security awareness of all staff to ensure robust protection of personal information going forward. Both incidents highlight significant vulnerabilities in the management of private donor information within charitable organizations in South Korea and underscore the critical need for enhanced security practices in safeguarding personal data.
