Rapper, Mayor, and Now PM... How Balen Shah has Climbed the Ladder of Power in Nepal
Balen Shah, a former mayor and rapper, is gaining attention in Nepal's elections as he challenges established political figures following significant protests by Generation Z.
Nepal is holding elections today, featuring a unique candidate pool that includes several former Prime Ministers and the renowned rapper Balen Shah, who previously served as the mayor of Kathmandu. The elections mark a crucial political landscape shift following the collapse of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli's government, catalyzed by Generation Z protests in September 2025. This will be the first nationwide election since these protests, which saw a significant engaged youth voter base, particularly first-time voters among Gen Z who are expected to influence the outcome significantly.
Balen Shah, popularly known as 'Balen', is emerging as a noteworthy contender against veteran leaders, symbolizing a broader trend of youth involvement in Nepali politics. As approximately 1.9 crore voters head to the polls, including around eight lakh first-time voters from the Gen Z demographic, all eyes are on how this politically active youth group will vote. Their participation is being closely monitored to assess whether the disillusionment with older political traditions will translate into support for fresher, non-traditional candidates like Balen Shah.
This election's atmosphere is thick with discussion surrounding Nepal's monarchy and the role of youth in shaping the political narrative. Balen Shah's rise, from a local celebrity to a potential Prime Minister, encapsulates the broader desire for change among the electorate and highlights the shifting dynamics within Nepalese politics, where established norms are being increasingly challenged by new voices and perspectives.
