Road gives way during heavy rains and communities are isolated in Marabá, in southeastern Pará
Heavy rains in Marabá, southeastern Pará, have caused significant damage to the Rio Preto road, isolating several rural communities.
Heavy rainfall in the city of Marabá, southeastern Pará, Brazil, has led to substantial damage to the Rio Preto road, which connects various rural villages. A section of the road gave way, splitting in two, as evidenced by images captured by local residents. Authorities from the Municipal Secretariat of Transportation and Public Works of Marabá are currently working to restore traffic in the affected areas.
One particularly damaged stretch is located between the villages of Três Poderes and União, where the images show the force of the water eroding the vegetation along the road's edges at the time of the collapse. As a result of the damage, several agricultural communities have become isolated, making it impossible to transport their produce, which sustains Marabá and neighboring cities. Furthermore, another impacted section serves as a route towards the city of Parauapebas, complicating access for both residents and suppliers.
The local government has announced plans to carry out emergency repairs to restore access and facilitate the movement of goods and services in the affected regions. This incident underscores the challenges posed by extreme weather events in the area and highlights the importance of infrastructure resilience in maintaining community connectivity and agricultural productivity in the face of natural disasters.
