Where is the area in Japan with the least pollen? Is it in the capital region? It has been revealed from past data.

A recent study reveals that the least pollen falls in Ibusuki, Kagoshima Prefecture, where no pollen was recorded, contrasting with Aomori Prefecture, which had the highest pollen counts.

A comprehensive analysis by Weather News has identified Ibusuki in Kagoshima Prefecture as the area with the least pollen in Japan, with an astonishing count of zero pollen grains per square centimeter recorded from March to May 2022-2025. This finding highlights the unique climate and geography of the southwest islands, which are immune to pollen sources due to their isolation by the sea. In contrast, more populated areas within the capital region, such as Tokyo's Koto Ward, had relatively low pollen counts compared to other regions. Weather patterns play a vital role in these findings, as coastal areas experience less pollen due to the dominant influence of sea breezes and the distance from key pollen sources.

On the other hand, the study also revealed that the highest pollen counts were seen in Aomori Prefecture’s Hashikami Town, where 156 pollen grains were recorded per cubic centimeter. The reasons for these high counts were attributed to dense forestry in Aichi Prefecture, where the majority of trees are cedar and hinoki. Such environments provide ample sources for pollen dispersal, particularly in warmer weather when pollen grains can accumulate in the atmosphere. Furthermore, the study emphasizes that pollen dispersion is not a consistent daily occurrence, rather, it peaks during specific warm and windy days throughout the season, impacting regions differently based on their weather conditions.

In perspective, the study also sheds light on the prevalence of pollen allergies in Japan, with a recent survey indicating that 56% of respondents reported suffering from pollen allergies. Regions like Tokushima Prefecture have the highest reported rates at 69%, indicating a significant public health concern. Such findings not only inform individuals about pollen levels in their area but also stress the importance of understanding seasonal weather variations, which could help mitigate allergy symptoms for those affected during pollen-heavy periods.
