Public transport in Campinas: see what the winning bidders will have to comply with before the start of operations
The new public transport concession in Campinas has been awarded to Sancetur and the Grande Campinas consortium, marking a significant shift after years of delays and legal issues.
After decades of delays, judicial hurdles, and allegations of attempted fraud, the new concession for public transport in Campinas has finally been awarded. The companies Sancetur and the Grande Campinas consortium emerged victorious in the auction and are set to operate collective transport for the next 15 years, with an option for a five-year extension. However, the transition will not be immediate as various legal steps must be completed before the contract signing and the commencement of operations. Until that occurs, the current companies will continue to manage the transport service.
In an interview with G1, Campinas' mayor, DΓ‘rio Saadi, and the president of Emdec, VinΓcius Riverete, outlined the necessary steps that the winning companies must take following the auction. One of the first requirements is for the companies to demonstrate their capability to operate under the new cost conditions, especially since the original bids at the auction were altered. The timeline for these actions involves the submission of updated planning documents, which the winning bidders have five working days to provide, with a possible extension of an additional five days.
This development reflects a crucial moment for public transport in Campinas, as many residents have faced a long-standing struggle with inadequate services. The successful transition to the new operators could lead to improvements in service delivery and operational efficiency, addressing the previous challenges that have hindered the transport sector for years.
