First contract: PAHO offered national laboratories to sell medicines and supplies through regional funds
The Pan American Health Organization has opened opportunities for local pharmaceutical companies in Argentina to supply medicines and health products through regional funds, which is expected to lower costs and enhance technology transfer.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has initiated a significant step towards integrating Argentine pharmaceutical companies into regional health supply chains by offering them the opportunity to sell medicines and health supplies using regional funds. This initiative was made public during a meeting with sector representatives, highlighting a partnership with Sinergium worth $240 million per year. The engagement aims to leverage local capabilities to meet the health demands of the region, ultimately benefiting the nationโs economy.
Officials from both PAHO and Argentina's Ministry of Health believe that this collaboration will not only reduce the costs associated with purchasing vaccines and medical supplies but also promote greater technological transfer to Argentine companies. This strategic move positions Argentina to enhance its pharmaceutical exports and establish itself as a key player in the regional health supply market. Jarbas Barbosa, the director of PAHO, emphasized the uniqueness of this approach, as it is grounded in principles of equity, solidarity, and transparency, distinguishing it from other regional blocs.
The announcement comes at a time when many countries are looking to strengthen their public health systems, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. By facilitating local production and procurement of health technologies, this initiative is expected to foster a more resilient health infrastructure in Argentina while simultaneously benefiting surrounding nations that rely on regional cooperation for health resources. This partnership could serve as a model for future collaborations aimed at improving healthcare access and sustainability in Latin America.
