‘We have to pay everything,’ says Sergipe resident in Dubai awaiting flight back to Brazil

A group of 33 people from Sergipe, Brazil, is stranded in Dubai due to canceled flights amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, facing costs for their accommodations and awaiting assistance.

A group of 33 residents from Sergipe, Brazil, are currently stranded in Dubai after their flights were canceled in the wake of escalating tensions involving attacks from Iran in response to actions by the United States and Israel. The group is lodging in a hotel, incurring their own expenses while they await a resolution to their travel situation. So far, only three individuals from the group have successfully returned to Brazil.

Iago Menezes, an engineer who is part of the group, expressed frustrations over the lack of response from the airline and the Brazilian embassy, which has yet to initiate any repatriation efforts. The group remains in relatively stable conditions as no one has reported illness or injury. However, they are growing increasingly anxious as they await a confirmed flight home, which was scheduled for Thursday but ultimately was canceled.

Among those in Dubai is Professor Luiz Carlos, who provided an update on the situation, mentioning that the group was negotiating with Qatar Airlines to facilitate their return. The emotional strain of uncertainty and the financial burden of staying in an expensive city like Dubai have compounded the difficulties faced by these stranded Brazilians, emphasizing the need for swift diplomatic and logistical solutions to help them return home.
