MPMG recommends that real estate agencies do not increase rents in Juiz de Fora during the state of calamity
The Public Ministry of Minas Gerais urged real estate agencies to refrain from raising rents in Juiz de Fora due to the recent calamity caused by floods, which resulted in numerous casualties and displaced individuals.
In response to the devastating floods in Juiz de Fora, which resulted in the loss of 65 lives and left thousands of individuals displaced, the Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MPMG) has issued strong recommendations to real estate agencies and the local commercial syndicate, SindicomΓ©rcio. These recommendations advocate for a suspension of any rental increases that lack technical justification, with a focus on protecting the vulnerable population affected by this natural disaster.
This mandate by the Consumer Protection Prosecutor's Office was prompted by numerous reports indicating that landlords and real estate companies were significantly increasing rental prices in reaction to the surging demand for housing, exploiting the aftermath of the disaster. The MPMG has declared that their recommendations will be enforceable for a period of 180 days, coinciding with the official state of calamity declared in the region. The organization plans to closely monitor compliance within the real estate sector and has warned that legal and administrative measures could be taken against those who disregard these guidelines.
The MPMG emphasizes that this intervention aims to safeguard the already struggling population from further hardships that could arise from opportunistic price increases during a time when individuals are experiencing both material and emotional losses from the catastrophic event. This approach reflects a commitment to consumer protection and supporting the community in recovery efforts amidst a challenging period for Juiz de Fora.
