Two Minutes to Catastrophe: How a Strike on the Largest US Military Base Was Averted

Iranian Revolutionary Guard attempted a strike on the Al Udeid air base, home to US troops, but was intercepted by Qatari forces.

On Monday morning, sources revealed that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard dispatched two Soviet-made Su-24 tactical bombers toward the Al Udeid air base, which typically hosts around 10,000 US troops. Among the targets was Ras Laffan, an important natural gas processing complex that underpins Qatar's economy. Reports indicated that the Iranian aircraft were just 'two minutes' away from their targets and were visually identified carrying bombs and guided armaments.

Qatari forces sent out a radio warning when the aircraft flew at an altitude of just 24 meters to avoid radar detection, yet no response was received from the Iranian air force. Due to 'time constraints' and based on available evidence, the aircraft were identified as hostile. In response, Qatar scrambled its warplanes, and one F-15 fighter jet engaged in an aerial confrontation with the Iranian bombers, attempting to prevent a potential disaster at the base.

This incident underscores the rising tensions in the region, particularly the provocative actions from Iran and the necessity for prompt responses from nations involved in regional security. The close call at the Al Udeid air base raises significant concerns about the safety and security of US military installations in the Gulf, given the ongoing hostilities and the complex interplay of regional powers.
