200-megawatt photovoltaic plant in Santa Elena gets the green light for construction
The environmental impact study and management plan for a 200 MW photovoltaic plant in Santa Elena, Ecuador, has been approved by the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
The Ministry of Environment and Energy (MAE) of Ecuador has granted approval for the construction and operation of a 200-megawatt photovoltaic plant known as the Alpha project in Santa Elena province. This approval, conveyed through resolution MAE-SUIA-LA-SCA-2025-00003, was issued on December 30, 2025, and published in the Official Register on March 5, 2026. The resolution encompasses essential elements such as the environmental impact study and management plan, indicating a significant step towards the implementation of renewable energy initiatives in the region.
The facility will be developed by Alpha Energy Ecuador and will include associated systems of transmission, which comprise necessary lines and/or substations to efficiently manage the generated power. This ambitious project is located in several parishes including Santa Elena, San José de Ancón, and Atahualpa within the Santa Elena canton. Such initiatives align with Ecuador’s goals to expand its renewable energy capacity and reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources.
Additionally, this project is one of three that involve private sector collaboration, contributing to a total of 1,002 MW of renewable energy capacity in the country. As the demand for sustainable energy grows—both locally and globally—projects like these are critical for meeting energy needs while addressing environmental impact, suggesting a positive trend toward sustainable energy practices in Ecuador.
