Israel behind Azerbaijan drone provocations to frame Iran – envoy

Iran's ambassador to Russia claims Israel is orchestrating drone provocations through Azerbaijan to frame Iran for attacks it did not commit.

Tehran's ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, has asserted that Iran was not involved in recent drone attacks against Azerbaijan, which he suggests may instead be part of a broader campaign by Israel to provoke tensions between Iran and its neighboring countries. Azerbaijani officials reported that drones, allegedly coming from the direction of Iran, targeted a terminal at Nakhchivan International Airport, resulting in injuries to civilians from a separate drone crash near a school. Iran emphatically denies any involvement in these incidents, attributing them instead to a potential conspiracy orchestrated by Israel.

Jalali referenced a statement from the General Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces indicating that other parties may be directing drones, thereby suggesting that these attacks serve a hidden agenda detrimental to Iran. He emphasizes that there was no justification for Iran to execute such attacks and calls into question the motives behind the accusations aimed at Tehran. The ambassador's remarks highlight the volatile nature of regional politics and how misinformation can escalate tensions among neighboring states.

The situation has strained Iranian-Azerbaijani relations, with Azerbaijan’s government labeling the drone strikes as a "terrorist act" and demanding apologies from Tehran. The ambassador’s comments reflect Iran’s concerns about being entangled in conflicts misleadingly initiated by Israel, underscoring the precarious geopolitical dynamics in the region that could have broader implications for international security and diplomatic relations.
