The 'Amazon I Want' project has launched a new season of discussions in Brazil’s National Congress in Brasília, centering around the theme 'Democracy in the Digital Age.' This year's events aim to explore how technology is reshaping electoral processes in the northern states of Brazil, particularly during the heated election year. Various stakeholders, including civil society representatives, business leaders, experts, and lawmakers gathered at the Black Hall of Congress to participate in this dialogue.
During the event, Marcelo Bechara, director of Institutional Relations in Media at Grupo Globo, delivered the keynote address. He emphasized the importance of discussing the role of technology in the Amazon, especially given that elections are underway. Bechara highlighted the ongoing heated debates, asserting that the discussions around technological advancements and their impact on democracy are crucial and should be at the forefront of public discourse during such a pivotal time in Brazil's political landscape.
Additionally, Claudia Daou Paixão e Silva, the president of Fundação Rede Amazônica, reiterated the initiative’s goal to stimulate robust discussions about the influence of digital innovations on governance and democratic practices in the Amazon. This initiative seeks to foster a comprehensive understanding of how these changes can affect the electorate and the overarching political ecosystem, hence contributing to a more informed and engaged citizenry as Brazil navigates its electoral future.
