PF conducts search at the mayor's house in Sorriso (MT) in operation investigating 'box 2' scheme

The Federal Police conducted a search of the mayor of Sorriso's home as part of an operation investigating alleged electoral fraud in Brazil.

In a significant move against alleged electoral fraud, the Federal Police of Brazil executed a search warrant at the residence of Alei Fernandes, the mayor of Sorriso, located approximately 420 km from Cuiabá. This operation, known as the third phase of Operation Rustius, focuses on suspicions surrounding ' caixa 2' or unlawful campaign financing concerning the upcoming elections in 2024. Additionally, the mayor faced severe financial repercussions, including the blockage of his bank accounts and the freezing of R$ 608,000 by the judicial authorities.

Alei Fernandes, who is affiliated with the União party, has previously been acquitted by the Electoral Court regarding similar accusations of ' caixa 2', as the court found insufficient evidence to uphold the claims made by the Electoral Public Ministry and the losing candidate in his election. The mayor's legal team expressed shock at this renewed action by the authorities, particularly given the prior conclusion of the investigation that cleared him of wrongdoing. They noted that they had not yet received access to the procedural documents, which hinders the defense's capacity to respond.

The Federal Police indicated that 23 individuals have been indicted in connection with this case, with 21 facing charges for negligence or for facilitating illegal financial practices. The ongoing investigation highlights ongoing concerns regarding electoral integrity in Brazil, particularly as the 2024 elections approach, raising questions about political corruption and the enforcement of electoral laws.
