Washington must avoid new tariffs with Ottawa: Canadian and U.S. mayors

Mayors from Canadian and U.S. cities are urging Washington to prevent new tariffs on Canada during a review of the trilateral trade agreement.

Mayors from various cities in Canada and the U.S. have come together to urge Washington to avoid implementing new tariffs on Canada, especially during the ongoing review of the trilateral trade agreement. This appeal comes from the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, a coalition representing a significant portion of the economies of both nations. They highlight the importance of maintaining favorable trade relations to foster economic growth in the region.

The coalition, which includes municipal and Indigenous leaders, emphasizes that the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River region accounts for nearly 50% of all Canada-U.S. bilateral trade, supporting a massive $12.98 trillion economy. Toronto Deputy Mayor Paul Ainslie commented on the longstanding importance of the U.S.-Canada trade relationship, describing it as vital for the economic prosperity of the participating communities. The mayors stress that enhancing local water infrastructure investments is essential to strengthening these trade relations.

Additionally, the mayors are advocating for the preservation and enhancement of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), expressing concerns over potential changes that could adversely affect the established trade dynamics. They warn that introducing new tariffs or increasing existing ones could undermine both economic stability and collaboration efforts across the border, particularly amidst the ongoing discussions surrounding trade agreements.
