The enthusiasm among participants is palpable, as they shout cheers and support one another, fostering a sense of community and friendship. According to 7th grader Elli Hulkkonen, cheerleading is intense but offers great camaraderie. The Finnish Cheerleading Federation notes that cheerleading is among Finland's fastest-growing sports, with the number of participants doubling over the past decade. This growth is particularly notable in regions like Lapland, where previously there was less participation compared to the rest of the country. This indicates a broader trend of diversification in sports engagement across Finland, moving beyond the traditional urban centers. In Lapland alone, approximately 600 individuals are now involved in cheerleading, reflecting strong year-on-year growth. This increase not only promotes physical activity among youth but also contributes to social development in smaller communities like Muonio, where new friendships and teamwork skills are formed.
