"The sidewalk belongs to the church, it’s mine," says priest caught expelling merchants from front of parish in Aracaju

A priest in Aracaju has been filmed expelling local vendors selling in front of his church, claiming the sidewalk belongs to the parish.

A video circulating on social media showcases a confrontation between Father Marcelo Conceição of the Perpetual Help Parish and vendors operating in front of the church in the Orlando Dantas neighborhood in South Aracaju. In the footage, the priest is seen prohibiting the sale of goods, asserting that the presence of vendors transforms the church’s entrance into a market. He insists that the sidewalk in question belongs to the parish and has already contacted the Municipal Urban Services Company (Emsurb) regarding the issue.

Father Marcelo emphasizes his authority over the area, stating, "The sidewalk is the Church’s, it’s mine," and threatens to cancel the Wednesday mass if the vendors do not cease their activities. The vendors, feeling aggrieved, argue they occupy public space and express their dissatisfaction with the priest's harsh stance. One vendor expresses sadness over the situation, to which the priest coldly responds that she should keep her sadness to herself.

The situation raises questions about the use of public space and the authority of religious figures in community matters. While the vendors claim their right to sell in public areas, Father Marcelo's determination to maintain the sanctity of the church's entrance reflects the ongoing tension between commercial activities and community values in urban environments. The response from the Archdiocese of Aracaju is still pending, adding to the community's intrigue regarding how this matter will be resolved.
